El Gobierno de Estados Unidos ha indicado este lunes que «está siguiendo muy de cerca los últimos acontecimientos relacionados con la reformas electorales en México», al tiempo que ha remarcado su respaldo a las instituciones electorales independientes.
El portavoz del Departamento de Estado estadounidense, Ned Price, ha recalcado que Washington «cree que un sistema electoral independiente y bien dotado de recursos, y el respeto a la independencia judicial sustentan una democracia sana», según reza un comunicado.
«Hoy, en México, vemos un gran debate sobre las reformas electorales sobre la independencia de las instituciones electorales y judiciales que ilustra la vibrante democracia de México. Respetamos la soberanía de México», ha afirmado el portavoz.
Asimismo, Price ha expresado la importancia de «instituciones fuertes y una pluralidad de voces», en el marco de sistemas democráticos y el Estado de derecho.
«En todo el mundo, hemos sido testigos de desafíos a la democracia que han puesto y están poniendo a prueba la fortaleza de las instituciones electorales y judiciales independientes», ha agregado.
Más de 500.000 personas, según estimaciones afines a los convocantes, se concentraron este domingo en la plaza del Zócalo de Ciudad de México para protestar contra la reforma de la normativa electoral que impulsa el presidente mexicano, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Los manifestantes, respaldados por los partidos de la oposición, aseguran que la reforma conocida como Plan B despoja de competencias clave al Instituto Nacional Electoral y exigen por ello a la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación declarar «inconstitucional» la reforma, aprobada la semana pasada.
