#CALIFORNIA | La Unión Estadunidense de Libertades Civiles (ACLU) exigió este sábado a las autoridades locales que cumplan con su «promesa» de mantener a Los Ángeles como ciudad santuario, después de las múltiples redadas realizadas ayer por el Servicio de Control de Migración y Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE).
«Los líderes municipales rompieron su promesa. Agentes del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles ayudaron a los agentes federales a aterrorizar los barrios de Los Ángeles, impidiendo que la gente fuera a trabajar, compareciera ante el tribunal de inmigración o asistiera a las graduaciones de sus hijos», afirmó Andres Kwon, abogado y asesor principal de políticas de la Fundación ACLU del Sur de California, en un comunicado.
Kwon, en nombre de esta organización no partidista y sin ánimo de lucro que defiende derechos y libertades civiles garantizados por la Constitución de Estados Unidos, calificó la actuación del ICE, que se saldó con aproximadamente 45 detenidos, como propia de «matones enmascarados que secuestran y encierran a angelinos en sótanos».
«Cuando la policía lanza gases lacrimógenos contra manifestantes y observadores legales que ejercen sus derechos amparados en la Primera Enmienda, y cuando los líderes sindicales son brutalizados por atreverse a oponerse a una injusticia flagrante, preguntamos a nuestros líderes locales y estatales: ¿Dónde están? ¿Qué harán para acabar con esta locura?», continuó el abogado de ACLU.
Al menos tres grandes operativos migratorios —en los que hubo fuertes enfrentamientos con activistas y miembros de la comunidad que trataron de evitar las detenciones— fueron reportados ayer por los defensores de los migrantes en localidades eminentemente hispanas del centro de Los Ángeles.
Angélica Salas, directora de la Coalición por los Derechos Humanos de los Inmigrantes de Los Ángeles (CHIRLA), reportó ayer en una conferencia de prensa que al menos 45 migrantes fueron detenidos.
No obstante, advirtió que la cifra podría aumentar a medida que se conozcan más reportes.
El operativo estuvo apoyado por agentes vestidos con uniformes camuflados y vehículos blindados, que utilizaron gases para dispersar a los manifestantes.
El FBI confirmó en un comunicado la participación de su personal en las redadas migratorias. También se observaron agentes portando identificaciones de la DEA.
Dos de las redadas se realizaron en negocios del Distrito de la Moda, donde se efectuó el arresto de por lo menos dos docenas de trabajadores, según detallaron activistas que presionaban a los agentes para evitar el operativo.
Este es el operativo simultáneo más grande ocurrido en Los Ángeles tras la llegada de Donald Trump a la Casa Blanca con una promesa de deportaciones masivas.
En las últimas semanas, la administración republicana ha hecho varios cambios en ICE para presionar por más arrestos. El Ejecutivo estadunidense tiene como objetivo realizar al menos tres mil arrestos al día, pero las detenciones de trabajadores que no suponen un riesgo para la comunidad han comenzado a generar gran rechazo.
