🔸El secretario de Economía afirmó que el acuerdo comercial seguirá en operación aun si no se aprueba su extensión por 16 años más, al tiempo que México ratificará su intención de mantener vigente el tratado durante la revisión prevista para julio
#NACIONAL | El Tratado entre México, Estados Unidos y Canadá (T-MEC) permanecerá vigente al menos durante la próxima década, incluso si los tres países no alcanzan un acuerdo para extender su vigencia por otros 16 años, aseguró el secretario de Economía, Marcelo Ebrard.
El funcionario explicó que el plazo para que cualquiera de los socios notificara formalmente su intención de abandonar el acuerdo ya venció, por lo que la posibilidad de una disolución quedó descartada en esta etapa del proceso de revisión.
De acuerdo con Ebrard, el próximo 1 de julio México, Estados Unidos y Canadá deberán expresar oficialmente su postura sobre la extensión del tratado. La administración de la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum enviará una carta en la que manifestará su respaldo para prolongar la vigencia del acuerdo por 16 años más.
El titular de Economía señaló que, en caso de que alguno de los países no apoye esa ampliación, el T-MEC continuará operando por 10 años adicionales con revisiones anuales, conforme al mecanismo previsto en el propio tratado. Añadió que uno de los temas a definir será el alcance de esas revisiones para evitar incertidumbre entre los inversionistas, especialmente en sectores como el automotriz y el acerero, donde los cambios requieren procesos de largo plazo.
Ebrard también destacó que actualmente alrededor del 85 por ciento del comercio entre México y Estados Unidos se realiza libre de aranceles, lo que, afirmó, representa una ventaja para la economía mexicana frente a las medidas proteccionistas impulsadas por Washington en meses recientes.
Asimismo, adelantó que la revisión formal del acuerdo continuará con nuevas reuniones entre los equipos negociadores de los tres países, incluida una ronda presencial prevista para julio en territorio mexicano, donde se discutirán temas como reglas de origen, contenido regional y competitividad de Norteamérica.
